Shunga’s popularity really started during the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edo_period" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; color: black; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.00392157) 1px 1px 1px;" target="_blank">Edo Period 1603-1868</a> when the country was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. This rise in popularity stemmed largely from the dominant male population which had massively increased as a result of the high number of samurai/retainers required to guard provincial lords and their estates and maintain law and order, and through the surge in agricultural laborers required to produce the food to feed this large population. To get an idea of what we’re talking about, the city of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edo" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; color: black; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.00392157) 1px 1px 1px;" target="_blank">Edo</a>—the former name for Tokyo—had a population of one million by 1721. This made Edo the largest city on the planet. But what’s more staggering is that seventy percent (70%) of the city’s population were male. This meant a lot of horny blokes looking for good wank material.</div>

Takato Yamamoto was born in Akita Prefecture (Japan) in 1960. After graduating from the painting department of the Tokyo Zokei University, he experimented with the Ukiyo-e Pop style. He further refined and developed that style to create his “Heisei estheticism” style. His first exhibition was held in Tokyo, in 1998.</div>

Yamamoto tags his work “Heisei estheticism.” But this doesn’t really mean much. It’s just a nominal title for something created during the Heisei period. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisei_period" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; color: black; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.00392157) 1px 1px 1px;" target="_blank">Heisei period</a>started on January 8th, 1989, with the death of Emperor Hirohito and the ascension of his son Emperor Akihito. It’s little more than a descriptive time frame like saying Shakespeare’s work is Elizabethan drama. The “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aestheticism" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; color: black; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.00392157) 1px 1px 1px;" target="_blank">estheticism</a>” bit references the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aestheticism" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; color: black; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.00392157) 1px 1px 1px;" target="_blank">Aesthetic Movement</a>, which believed in “art for art’s sake” with an emphasis on “the visual and sensual qualities of art and design over practical, moral or narrative considerations.”</div>

That’s the answer that photographer <a href="http://www.dazeddigital.com/tag/maisie-cousins" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black;">Maisie Cousins</a> gives when I ask her about the relationship between the beautiful and the grotesque in her sticky, sickly and hyper-saturated imagery. This answer remains unchanging. In fact, it’s a refreshing reiteration of the one she gave to us in an interview last year – underlining Cousins’ acute focus when it comes to smashing up stereotypes by being unflinchingly honest about the female body.</div>

The policy prohibited military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closeted homosexual or bisexual service members or applicants, while barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from military service. The policy prohibited people who "demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts" from serving in the armed forces of the United States, because their presence "would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability." In this series Ashkan Honarvar shows different male bodies that are deformed into something ghostly, the bodies float alienated in midair and show red parts that cover their body. <br />
In order to protect the somewhat delicate hand-rolled cigarettes that were sold during the early part of the 20th century, fashionable cigarette cases crafted in gold, silver or other precious materials started popping up in the hands of elite members of society all around the world. </div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
These cases became a venue for artists to use their handiwork to produce images that would appeal to all kinds of customers, including those who enjoyed gazing at erotic images while enjoying a relaxing smoke. Born out of function cigarette cases became decadent pieces of art. Even the posh egg-man Peter Carl Fabergé designed cigarette cases in the late 19th century that were ornately decorated with precious jewels such as <a href="http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2014/russian-works-art-faberge-icons-l14113/lot.636.html" style="color: black;" target="_blank">diamonds</a>, sapphires and emeralds. While Fabergé‘s fancy cigarette cases were fit for the gentry or royal crowds, the “erotic” themed cases in this post were probably <em>not</em>flashed around by members of the upper-class or aristocracy while in mixed company. </div>

Occasionally these authentic era-specific cases do pop up on sites like Etsy and eBay but even then they can run several hundred dollars a pop. I’ve got a number of beautiful erotic cigarette cases for you to look at below—that said, though they are incredible works of vintage art (some of which are over 100 years old), they are NSFW.</div>

Performative responses to space and architecture</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.3; margin-bottom: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
Within her performance-based artistic practice, spanning from the 1970’s until the present, the Belgrade-born artist Marina Abramovic has produced diverse work in different media, from artistic live performances to installations including sculptures, photos and video pieces. An important aspect of this practice is the artist’s consistent concern with establishing a direct engagement with audiences; as she claims in her essay <em>Body Art</em><em>,</em> “What’s very important about performance is the direct relationship with the public, the direct energy transmission between public and the performer” (Abramovic, 2002: 27). Most interestingly, Abramovic does not wish to address audiences as part of a typical performer and audience-as-spectator structure, where the artist or the live work is preconceived and prioritized over the audience’s response. In her own words:</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.3; margin-bottom: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
First of all: what is performance? Performance is some kind of mental and physical construction in which an artist steps in, in front of the public. Performance is not a theatre piece, is not something that you learn and then act, playing somebody else. It’s more like a direct transmission of energy…The more the public, the better the performance gets, the more energy is passing through the space. (Abramovic, 2002: 27)</div>

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23903035.post-36458281224147273192013-11-04T15:53:00.000+00:002017-02-13T19:59:18.463+00:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23903035.post-42843646713215462562013-08-14T00:01:00.000+01:002017-02-13T19:47:18.475+00:00<div dir="rtl" style="text-align: right;" trbidi="on">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23903035.post-64977226470784191082012-08-21T07:01:00.000+01:002017-05-02T22:25:33.636+01:00<div style="text-align: right;">
